Evaluating AI photo review for auto claims: questions to ask
The Complete iQ team · · 3 min read
“AI-powered” appears on nearly every claims technology website now, and it can mean very different things. Some tools check whether a photo is usable. Others try to estimate repair costs or decide outcomes. Before you compare demos, get clear on what you want the AI to do, and ask every vendor the same questions.
1. Where in the process does the AI run?
AI that runs during capture can fix problems while the claimant is still at the vehicle: a blurry photo, the wrong angle, an unreadable VIN. AI that runs only after submission can describe what it sees, but by then a bad photo means another request and another wait.
Ask:
- Does the AI give the person taking photos feedback in real time?
- What happens when a photo is flagged: must they retake it, or can they continue?
- Can we set those rules ourselves?
2. Who makes the decision?
There’s a big difference between AI that informs an adjuster and AI that decides on their behalf. Be explicit about which you want for each step: photo quality, damage findings, triage, repair estimates and settlement.
Ask:
- Which outputs are advisory and which trigger actions automatically?
- Can an adjuster see, question and override every AI output?
- How are automated actions, such as a follow-up photo request, recorded?
3. Can reviewers see why?
A finding an adjuster can’t check is a finding they’ll either ignore or trust blindly. Neither is good.
Ask:
- Is each finding tied to the specific photo it came from?
- Does the system explain why it flagged something, such as “too dark to see the damage”?
- Can we see the evidence behind a VIN match or a triage result?
4. What happens to our data?
Inspection photos include license plates, VINs, locations and sometimes people.
Ask:
- Where is data hosted, and which service providers process it?
- How is our data separated from other customers’?
- Can we control how long photos, reports and logs are kept?
- Who in our organization can see photos, and is access logged?
5. How will we know it works for us?
Accuracy claims made on someone else’s data tell you little about your claims, your vehicles and your claimants’ phones. The only reliable test is your own.
A good pilot:
- Uses real claims or units, in the regions and loss types you care about
- Defines success up front: completion rate, follow-up rate, time to submit and adjuster feedback
- Compares against your current process on similar files
- Has a clear decision point at the end
6. How does it fit our workflow?
The best AI in the world doesn’t help if adjusters have to copy results between systems.
Ask:
- Can we start without an integration?
- Is there a documented API and signed webhooks for when we’re ready?
- Does it work for the people who’ll actually take the photos, with no app download for claimants?
How Complete iQ approaches AI
At Complete iQ, AI assists and adjusters decide. Complete iQ Inspect checks each photo during capture for quality and subject, reads the VIN and compares it with the claim, notes possible damage with a severity level and reviews whether the photo set is complete. Every finding is advisory and tied to its photo, and it doesn’t produce repair estimates. For minor losses, the optional Express track uses clear rules, with the reasons shown, to suggest the right level of review. We’d rather you test it on your own claims than take our word for it.
